Dear RoadtoSchool members,
One of the things that makes One Girl Can so unique is that we see all of the students we sponsor twice a year. We get to know their names by heart, the grades their achieving, and we spend time with them to learn more about what they want to accomplish in their lives, and help them break down barriers that might get in the way. The theme of this trip was What is Your Power and How Will You Use It to create the change you want to see in your world. We asked all the scholarship students in each of our ten schools to grab a chair and come and sit outside under a tree with us to talk about what we uniquely own as a strength. The conversations we’re incredibly profound on both sides. Our team of 7 consisting of photographers, donors, our ambassador and OGC staff had never even asked ourselves this question, and we were struggling with it on the fly as we asked the girls to give us their take. What surprised us most was that there wasn’t a single girl who didn’t feel she was powerful, and their answers were mostly more bold and confident than ours. This is what we heard. I’m outspoken. I’m opinionated. I’m bossy. I’m inspiring. I’m determined. I push boundaries. I have high self-esteem. I will fight for the rights of girls. I will fight against corruption. I will fight to defend the poor. I will ensure every child is educated. One Girl Can has built over 100 school buildings and provided almost 700 scholarships, but where we feel we’ve made the most difference is through the mentoring and one on one connections we have with developing young women to encourage them, listen to them, and coach them. We think what has had the most impact is just showing up consistently for them, and to let them know we’ll be here to support them for the long term until they achieve their success and can begin using their power to create the change they’re so focused on. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for choosing to be part of this change by supporting a girl with a scholarship, and also for the letters you write to her. We hope you enjoy this update from your student. Warm regards, Lotte Davis and the One Girl Can Team tess conrad | manager of philanthropy e.
